Teacher Wellbeing & Emotional Support

Because sometimes the support you need isn’t another career strategy.
It’s someone who helps you find yourself again.

At Exit Stage Teach, we spend every day talking to teachers who are questioning their future. Some know they’re ready to leave the classroom. Others desperately want to stay but no longer recognise the person they’ve become. Many sit somewhere in between, feeling emotionally exhausted, overwhelmed and unsure what the next step should be. Over the years, one thing has become incredibly clear. Before many teachers are ready to make career decisions, they first need the opportunity to process everything they’ve been carrying. The difficult parent meetings. The behaviour incidents. The workplace bullying. The investigations and complaints. The impossible expectations. The constant feeling that no matter how hard they work, it’s never enough.

Teaching asks an enormous amount of the people who care the most. While every profession has stressful days, teaching often requires people to absorb the emotions, trauma and challenges of everyone around them while quietly putting their own wellbeing last. Eventually, that weight catches up with you. Sometimes it looks like burnout. Sometimes it looks like anxiety. Sometimes it looks like losing confidence. Sometimes it simply feels like waking up one day and thinking, “I don’t feel like myself anymore.” If you’ve found yourself feeling that way, we want you to know something. You’re not weak. You’re not failing. And you don’t have to work through it alone.

Why emotional healing matters before making career decisions

People often assume that leaving teaching will automatically solve everything.
Sometimes it does.

Many teachers leave the classroom and build incredible new careers.
But we’ve also spoken to teachers who discovered that although they had changed jobs, they were still carrying years of stress, self-doubt and emotional exhaustion with them. That’s because changing your workplace doesn’t always heal what you’ve experienced.

Whether you stay in teaching or leave the profession altogether, you still take yourself with you. That’s why we believe emotional wellbeing deserves to be part of every career conversation. When you’re able to process what you’ve been through, rebuild your confidence and reconnect with yourself, you’re far more likely to make decisions from a place of clarity rather than survival.

Meet Susan Lister

For a long time, we searched for someone we could genuinely recommend to teachers in this space. Not someone who would tell people they should stay. Not someone who would convince people they should leave.
Someone who would simply meet teachers where they are.

When we met Susan Lister, we knew we’d found that person. Susan is a holistic counsellor, workplace wellbeing facilitator and retreat leader who has spent years helping women move through burnout, emotional exhaustion, anxiety, workplace challenges and major life transitions with warmth, compassion and genuine care.
What stood out to us wasn’t simply Susan’s experience. It was the way she listens.
There is no judgement. No pressure.
No expectation that you have everything figured out before reaching out.

Susan creates a calm, supportive space where teachers can finally put down what they’ve been carrying and begin reconnecting with themselves again.

How Susan supports teachers

Every teacher’s journey is different, which is why Susan offers a range of support options.

The Teacher Reset

Teaching asks so much of us that we often forget to look after ourselves.
The Teacher Reset has been designed specifically for educators who feel overwhelmed, emotionally exhausted or uncertain about what comes next.
Over twelve weeks, Susan works one-on-one with teachers to help them rebuild confidence, regulate their nervous system, strengthen boundaries and reconnect with themselves.
The program includes:
Six private 90-minute Zoom sessions
Personalised holistic counselling and wellbeing coaching
Reflection activities between sessions
Practical strategies tailored to your individual circumstances
Ongoing support as you begin creating a healthier future
Whether you’re planning to remain in teaching, considering a career change or simply trying to find yourself again, The Teacher Reset provides dedicated time to focus on you.

Retreats

Sometimes the most powerful thing you can do is step away from the constant demands of everyday life.

Susan’s retreats offer teachers the opportunity to slow down, reconnect with themselves and begin healing in a peaceful, supportive environment alongside other women who understand the importance of self-care.
Many teachers tell us they’ve spent years looking after everyone else.

These retreats provide permission to finally look after yourself.

Workplace Wellbeing Workshops

Healthy schools begin with healthy educators.
Susan also works with schools and organisations to deliver wellbeing workshops that support staff wellbeing, emotional resilience and sustainable workplace cultures.

If your school is looking to better support teacher wellbeing, Susan’s workshops offer practical, compassionate strategies designed specifically for people working in emotionally demanding environments.

Is this right for you?

Susan’s support may be exactly what you need if you:

* Simply want someone to listen without judgement.

A message from the Exit Stage Teach team

We know how difficult it can be to ask for help. Teachers spend their careers supporting everyone else, often believing they should be able to carry everything on their own. You don’t have to. Whether you’re staying in teaching, exploring a new career or simply trying to feel like yourself again, we genuinely believe Susan offers something incredibly special. Not because she has all the answers. But because she creates the space for you to discover your own.

If you’re ready to take that first step, we encourage you to learn more about Susan’s counselling sessions, The Teacher Reset program, retreats and workshops. Sometimes the bravest thing you can do isn’t push through. Sometimes it’s allowing someone to walk beside you while you heal.
